Various rental assistance programs in Oklahoma offer long-term housing vouchers, emergency financial aid, and eviction prevention services through state agencies, local community action organizations, and non-profit entities.
State and federal rental assistance programs
Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency (OHFA)
The Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency (OHFA) offers key rental assistance programs designed to support low-income families, elderly residents, and individuals with disabilities.
Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8)
This is OHFA’s largest tenant-based rental assistance initiative. It allows participating households to choose housing on the private market—including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments—anywhere in Oklahoma, except within the city limits of Norman, Shawnee, and Stillwater (where programs are managed by their own local housing authorities).
Status: The general waiting list is currently closed to new applicants.
Preferences and priority: When open, OHFA grants special priority to individuals or families experiencing homelessness (verified via a shelter or social service referral) and to individuals with disabilities.
Current applicants: If you have an active pre-application, you can check your position or update your contact information via the AssistanceConnect portal. You can also check your pre-application status by calling 866-569-6306.
Performance-Based Contract Administration (PBCA)
If you need immediate help and cannot wait for the tenant-based voucher waiting list to reopen, OHFA oversees specific subsidized housing properties across the state.
How it works: Unlike tenant-based vouchers, this rental assistance is tied directly to the building. If you move, the subsidy remains with the property.
How to apply: You must submit your application directly through the management office of a participating apartment complex. You can search for these communities using the OHFA-funded developments database.
OHFA Contact and Submission Channels
If you are an active participant or a property owner, or if you wish to check the status of an open application, you can contact OHFA through these official channels:
Submitting documents: If you are asked to submit documentation, please email it to raemails@ohfa.org. You must include the head of household’s last name and either your file ID number or the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN) on all files.
General inquiries: Call the Housing Choice Voucher program main line at 405-842-2471 or the toll-free number 800-256-1489.
Waiting list hotline: For specific questions regarding your position on the list, call 405-419-8299 or email waitlist@ohfa.org.
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Oklahoma
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Oklahoma funds federally subsidized rental assistance programs but does not directly manage individual properties or vouchers. Instead, HUD distributes federal aid to local agencies and private landlords who administer the programs for low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
HUD Public Housing Program
Unlike a mobile voucher, public housing assigns you a place in a specific, secure rental community managed directly by a local housing authority.
Eligibility: Determined by local public housing authorities (PHAs) based on your gross annual income, household size, and citizenship or eligible immigration status.
Finding listings: Consult the complete directory of HUD public housing authorities in Oklahoma to find an office near you.
